Sawyer Anderson Scores First Career Goal in Loss to JMU

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood field hockey fell 6-1 to James Madison on Friday evening at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field in Mid-American Conference action.

How it Happened
  • The Lancers (0-9, 0-4 MAC) battled the Dukes through the opening half, entering halftime trailing 1-0. James Madison opened the scoring with a penalty-corner goal from Azul Covarrubias with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
  • Longwood came out of halftime with an immediate response. Sophomore midfielder Sawyer Anderson scored her first career goal 1:47 into the third quarter, converting off a penalty corner from senior Channy Johnson to even the match at 1-1.
  • The Dukes (3-6, 3-1 MAC) answered less than a minute later, as Ava Drexler-Amey restored James Madison's lead at 2-1. Avery Ruckman then added another goal at the 36-minute mark to give the Dukes a 3-1 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
  • James Madison added three goals in the final period to pull away. Emilia Goldsmith scored early in the quarter before Emma Smit found the back of the cage twice off penalty corners to complete the scoring.
  • Junior goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk recorded 12 saves for the Lancers, keeping Longwood within striking distance throughout the match. Her total pushed her over the 400 career saves mark. 
  • Sophomore Hailey Flick led Longwood with two shots.

Up Next 
Longwood returns to action next week with a road trip to Michigan for a MAC contest against Central Michigan on Friday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. The Lancers wrap up the trip at Big Ten foe Michigan State on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m.
