RICHMOND, Va. — Freshman Bali Song won at No. 1 singles to lead the Longwood women's tennis team in its spring opener at VCU on Friday, a 6-1 loss.
Song beat the Rams' Viktoria Lackova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, cutting the Longwood deficit to 2-1.
VCU, which improved to 2-1 on the season with the win, opened the day with a doubles sweep to take the early lead and then finished off the match with victories on courts 2, 3 4, 5 and 6.
Sara Alba and Viktoria Lackova topped Feline van Eijkeleburg and Genevieve Dickey 6-3 on court 3 before Tan Andrade Sabando and Mariam Ibrahim defeated Song and Oriana Izarra, 6-4 at the top doubles flight to take the point. Hima Fernando and Elizaveta Gnilozubova fell to Andrea Magallanes and Sofia Jane Thorne, 7-6 (2) on court 2.
Thorne then beat van Eijkelenburg, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 to make it 2-0.
The Rams made it 3-1 as Andrade Sabando outlasted Izarra, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 4. VCU clinched the match as Magallanes won by retirement from Dickey, 6-3, 1-0.
Fernando took her No. 3 match with Ibrahim to three sets, falling 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 and Alba topped Alexis Broderick, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 to wrap the day.
Longwood (0-1) is back in action next Saturday at Christopher Newport. First serve is set for noon.
