HOW IT HAPPENED

Longwood was the best team on the field in the first half, but Appalachian State scored first. In the tenth minute, Olivia Simon scored on a bouncing ball in the box off a corner kick.
Reese Coggeshall made sure it didn't stay like that for long.

On the ensuing kickoff, Emma Jones found Coggeshall streaking towards the goal, and she hammered it into the top corner to tie the match 1-1. It was Coggeshall's first collegiate goal.

In the 12th minute, Meghan Piazza finished a penalty kick to give the Lancers the advantage 2-1, and kept it that way for the rest of the half.

The Mountaineers tied it in the 58th minute after a penalty kick was good from forward Izzi Wood.

Appalachian State took the lead for good in the 66th minute when Shannon Studer found Wood inside the box to make it 3-2.

Longwood created a handful of chances in the last 15 minutes, but couldn't find the finishing touch.

WHAT THEY SAID
"We are disappointed in the result, but I think we should be proud of the effort tonight," said Head Coach Todd Dyer. "It was a tight game back and forth, but we stood our ground and were combative and competitive the whole game. The game got stretched in the second half, and we just had a lapse in our defensive shape that cost us the third goal. It's a tough, but valuable lesson, and we'll use it to be better prepared next time."

ADDITIONAL NOTES
  • Longwood had 11 shots during the match, with six in the first and five in the second
  • Both teams had five shots on goal throughout the match
  • Piazza is 2-2 on penalty kicks for the year
