Longwood Draws 1-1 with Richmond on Senior Night

Piazza scores her fourth goal and Longwood honors six seniors

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood women's soccer bullied its way to a 1-0 lead at the half, but Richmond scored with three minutes left to earn a 1-1 draw on Thursday at the Longwood Athletics Complex.

Before the match, the Lancers honored their six seniors for senior night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

It was all Lancers in the first half. The team created multiple opportunities with seven shots.

Seven different players had a shot, and Longwood hunted around the box relentlessly.

Meanwhile, defenders Sydney Robertson, Berni Wayland, Sarah Olson and Taylor Kamalsky did not allow any shots from the Spiders in the first half.

In the 34th minute, Piazza finished off a nice 1-2-3 sequence from Sam Fischer and Madison Fitzpatrick for a 1-0 lead.

After the half, Richmond was able to equalize in the 88th minute with a header from Wilson, assisted by Julia Lishia, to end the match with a 1-1 tie.

WHAT THEY SAID

"That definitely feels like one we let get away", said Head Coach Todd Dyer. "After a strong first-half performance and a goal lead, we just stopped doing the things that were working for us on both sides of the ball. That's on us, especially me, so we need to correct it going into conference play."

ADDITIONAL NOTES
  • Longwood outshot Richmond 12-8
  • Sara Curtis had four saves
  • Piazza scored her fourth goal of the season
  • Fischer made her second assist of the season, and Fitzpatrick made her first

UP NEXT

The Lancers return to Farmville for the final matchup of a four-game homestand to begin conference play against Gardner-Webb on Sept. 20, with kickoff slated at 2 p.m. This game will be aired on ESPN+.
