FARMVILLE, Va. – Saturday, the weather was hot and sunny at the Longwood Cross Country Course.
Â
That didn't slow
Sophie Farley down. The Lancer sophomore elevated herself to a new level instead, setting a personal best and winning the Lancer Pink Invitational in the process.
Â
Farley's time of 17:42.90 was her fastest cross country 5K, and she topped the second-place finisher by 14 seconds en route to her second race win of the season.
Â
That helped the Lancer women finish second out of the four teams behind an average time that broke 19 minutes.
Â
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Â
The Lancers were a mere four points behind Radford in the team standings, with the two teams posting an identical average time of 18:51 and a total team time that was one second apart.
Â
Farley's time led the way for the field—and broke the program record in the process again—but freshman
Sydney O'Hara-Wood broke the 19-minute mark with an 18:47.9 to finish fourth.
Â
Sophomore
Kirsten Morley also cracked 19 minutes with an 18:58.0 on the challenging course to finish fifth.
Â
Nicole Pinder finished ninth behind a hard kick to the line for a 19:20.20, and
Priscilla Keller was the team's final scoring runner in 11
th with a 19:23.60.
Â
Riley Humphries (19:53.3) and
Madison Davis (19:53.6) finished neck-and-neck in 13
th and 14
th while pushing each other to break the 20-minute mark.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We knew today was going to be close with Radford, and I'm proud of the race the women put together," said Longwood Director of Cross Country and Track & Field
Brooke Craig. "They left it all out there. We've got some work to do from today, but this was proof they can do something big next month."
"When Sophie sets her mind on something, it will happen," Craig added about her sophomore. "She knew she needed to take the race from the gun, and she pushed the whole time."
