Defensive Lancers Fall to No. 15 West Virginia, 2-0

Mountaineers get two after halftime, including one with 10 men, to win

FARMVILLE, Va. — No. 15 West Virginia broke through with a pair goals after halftime to get by a game Longwood men's soccer team, 2-0, at the Longwood Athletic Conference on Friday.

The Lancers withstood nearly constant offensive pressure from the Mountaineers in the first half without bending, but were unfortunate in the second to concede a goal in the 71st minute when David Ambaek's attempted clearance of a cross deflected into the net.

The goal was credited to Pablo Pozos, his sixth of the year, from Marcus Caldeira.

West Virginia added to the lead, despite being down a man, since the 77th minute when Ethan Dekel Daks was clipped on the edge of the box. Carlos Hernando buried the ensuing penalty kick low into the left corner of the net for the final margin.

"Encouraging performance today from the guys," said Longwood head coach Paul Gilbert. "At times, we showed incredible grit and fight. I would like to see us be a little better on the ball, but I am sure that will improve as we go throughout the season."

After a first half in which WVU (4-1-1) held nearly 70 percent of possession and an 8-1 advantage in corners, the match got chippy in the second with five cards, including a straight red issued to Felix Ewald.

West Virginia led, 12-5, in shots on the day with Marc Bonnaire making two saves for his third clean sheet of the season. Max Hinke made one stop for Longwood.

Ezrah Serralde posted two shots for the Lancers, while others came from Brando Bedolla, Joao  Ratinho and Benjamin Ferrero

Longwood (1-3-1) is back in action Tuesday at Campbell. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
