BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Sophomore defender Joaquin Sonez scored his first first collegiate goal in the 70th minute, leading the Longwood men's soccer team to a 2-2 draw at Campbell in non-conference action at the Eakes Athletics Complex on Tuesday.
The Sonez tally helped the Lancers salvage a draw after the Camels scored goals 1:45 apart spanning both halves to earn a 2-1 advantage.
On the equalizer, Paul Espinoza carried the ball along the endline on the right side, and sent it into the penalty area, where Syrus Conolly flicked it across the face of goal to Sonez at the top of the six-yard box.
The draw helped Longwood (1-3-2) grab its first result against the former Big South Conference foe since beating Campbell Oct. 31, 2018 by a 3-0 count.
"Hard-fought result on the road against a good Campbell team," Longwood head coach Paul Gilbert said. "I thought we grew into the game and gave ourselves a chance to win later in the match. All in all, a successful trip. Excited to get back to campus and prepare for Big South play."
Longwood scored first, just 13 minutes into the contest, when Christer Salvesen found Benjamin Ferrero making a run down the right side. Salveson hit his fellow freshman in stride and Campbell goalkeeper Max Leviton made a late decision to come out, getting caught of off of his line. Ferrero took advantage, looping it over Leviton's head for his first career goal.
Campbell knotted the match with just 50 seconds remaining in the first half through James Roberts and took the lead only 55 seconds into the second half on a James Jenkin goal.
Campbell held a 16-10 advantage in shots and carried an 10-0 edge in corner kicks for the contest.
Longwood goalie Max Hinke moved to 1-2-2 on the season, making four saves. Leviton posted a pair of saves and is now 2-1-3 on the year.
Next up, the Lancers open Big South play on the road Saturday at Radford. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m., on ESPN+.
