Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lancers Roll Past Alabama A&M 4-0

Four Score in Season Opener for Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood women's soccer may have had a delay to start the match, but that didn't slow the team down at all.

The Lancers (1-0) ripped off four goals to cruise to a 4-0 win over Alabama A&M on Thursday night at the Longwood Athletic Complex. Emma Jones, Sam Fischer, Meghan Piazza and Claire Schultz all found the back of the net as part of a varied, relentless attack.

SCORE:
                              1             2             FINAL
ALA A&M            0             0             0
LWU                     2             2             4

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lancer forward line was aggressive and hungry throughout the night. The entire group pressed up the field, and it finally paid off in the 23rd minute. Victoria Drake sliced a cross through the box, and Jones banged it home on the back side of the goal for a 1-0 lead off the senior-to-senior connection.

Longwood never let up either. That effort paid off when two freshman connected in the final minute of the half to make it 2-0. Reese Coggeshall slipped a crafty pass to Fischer, and Fischer evaded a diving Alabama A&M (0-1) goalkeeper before slotting it home with 40 seconds until the break.

Piazza extended the lead to 3-0 in the 63rd minute as Longwood again put numbers forward in the box. The junior pounced on a pass from Hailey Baltzelle inside the six-yard box and didn't miss.

Schultz capped the scoring in the 77th minute by bullrushing her way through the defense and simply powering home a goal after splitting two defenders inside the 18.

The Lancer backline also was stout, turning away the counterattacks from Alabama A&M that managed to get past the aggressive Lancer front. The team blocked two of the three shots from the visitors.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"It's always good to start the season with a win," said Longwood Head Coach Todd Dyer. "To score four goals and earn a shutout is encouraging as well. It's still the beginning of our fall journey, so we will keep things in perspective and work to build on that performance as we get ready for Sunday."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • The four goals were the most since the Lancers scored four in 2023 against Gardner-Webb.
  • Fischer became the third freshman to score in the season opener in the past 11 years, with Alex Dinger (spring 2021) and Teresa Fruchterman (2014) the other two.
  • The win in the season opener was the first for the Lancers since 2022, when the team took out Richmond 1-0.
  • For goalkeeper Sara Curtis, it was her seventh shutout as a Lancer after posting six shutouts a season ago.
