HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers (2-0) started the first half strong, pressing American (0-2) and pinning the Eagles in their own half.
Emma Jones,
Claire Schultz and Fischer all forced American goalkeeper Addison Roemer to make some diving saves before Fischer finally broke through late in the first half.
In the 42
nd minute,
Coryn Silberstein bent in a free kick, and Fischer volleyed it home for a 1-0 lead.
After halftime, American came out with new energy, and Noriah Goldman tied the match at one apiece in the 56
th minute.
Longwood regained its footing and responded in kind. Jones ripped a shot that was blocked, and Fitzpatrick pounced on the rebound to put the Lancers up 2-1 in the 64
th minute.
The remainder of the game featured plenty of back-and-forth action, but the Lancer back line of
Sarah Olson,
Taylor Kamalsky,
Berni Wayland and
Kiki Putnam, alongside goalkeeper
Sara Curtis, preserved the lead. Curtis finished the night with seven saves.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"That was an exciting game with several momentum swings for each team, which makes the result that much more rewarding," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "We had some great chances in the first half, but their keeper came up with some amazing saves. I like that we responded after they tied it up, and we also dealt with a lot of pressure in the last 10 minutes. Our game management and discipline with our shape needs to be better, and games like this help us get closer to that. A hard-fought win tonight, and we look forward to VMI on Wednesday."
