Baseball Outslugged 22-11 Against USC Upstate

Webb Homers Twice For Second Straight Game, But Upstate Hits Six Home Runs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Myles Webb stayed hot for Longwood baseball, but USC Upstate's bats were equally hot on Saturday afternoon in game two of a three-game series at Harley Park.

Webb hit two homers for a second straight day for Longwood (11-36, 5-15 Big South), and James Nelson added one of his own for the Lancers. Matt Stevenson also hit his first home run, a grand slam, in a Longwood uniform, with the team's four home runs were a season high.

However, Johnny Sweeney hit two home runs for an Upstate (25-22, 12-5 Big South) side that cranked a season-high six home runs to win 22-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Upstate, which came into the weekend tied for first in the Big South, never trailed after jumping out to an early 7-0 lead in two innings. Preston Lucas hit a three-run double to open the scoring, and Sweeney capped it with a three-run home run.

Longwood got on the board in the fourth inning behind back-to-back home runs from Webb and Nelson. Webb hit his third homer of the series, a two-run shot, followed by Nelson's second long ball of the weekend with a solo homer to center field that cut it to 7-3.

Webb added another home run in the sixth inning, his fourth of the weekend and seventh of the year, but Sweeney had a grand slam as part of an avalanche of runs in the middle of the game for the Spartans.

That snowball allowed USC Upstate to put the game out of reach, even amid a rain delay after six innings.

Matt Stevenson pulled Longwood within 22-11 thanks to his first home run as a Lancer with a grand slam in the eighth inning.

Darin Kuskie (4-1) earned the win on the mound for USC Upstate. He struck out eight in six innings while giving up four runs on one walk and five hits.

Kaden Takahashi-Trader (0-1) took the loss for Longwood. He pitched into the second inning, giving up five runs on two hits and four walks.
