FARMVILLE, Va. – Brooke Bennett hit the ball on the screws all day for Longwood softball, and
Maggie Chapin added a solid effort in the circle for the Lancers on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The duo helped Longwood (12-22, 6-3 Big South) finish off a three-game sweep of Presbyterian with a 6-3 win at Bank of the James Park.
Â
Bennett went 3-3 at the plate with a pair of home runs, her first two collegiate homers, and Chapin struck out eight while earning the complete game win as the Lancers have now won six straight contests.
Â
"Great fight for three games," said Longwood Head Coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "I'm pleased with how we came out today and how they are staying dedicated to continuing to grow as a team and playing together. We have lots of hard work ahead of us, but I'm pleased with our growth from game to game and week to week."
Â
The Lancers struck first when
Sophia Knock clobbered a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Bennett then crushed her first college home run two batters later for a 2-0 lead.
Â
In the third inning, Bennett poked home a run with a single to center, and Longwood extended it to 4-0 through three complete.
Â
While the Lancer offense jumped out to the early lead, Chapin kept Presbyterian off balance. She didn't allow a multi-hit inning, and her eight strikeouts were one shy of a career high. The junior righthander also had at least one strikeout in six of the seven innings as well. She got the complete game win, her seventh of the year, while only giving up five hits and two walks against the eight punchouts.
Â
As the game went on, the offense pushed the lead to 5-0 on a
Kate Westmiller RBI groundout, and then Bennett swatted her second homer of the day for a 6-0 advantage through five innings. While Presbyterian's (19-19, 3-6 Big South) Mallory Fletcher trimmed the lead to 6-1 in the sixth, Chapin danced away from further damage.
Peyton Duncan (10-9) took the lsos for the Blue Hose. She gave up five runs on five hits and three walks against one strikeout in four innings of work.
Â
The Lancers will hit the road and head to Radford next weekend. The three-game series begins on Friday afternoon, April 11, with first pitch set for 4 p.m. All three games are slated to air on ESPN+.
