HOW IT HAPPENED:
Winthrop took an early lead, but Hirst keyed Longwood's response with back-to-back goals in the first. She put the first one home herself before finding
Jordan Fitzgerald for the second to knot the score at two.
Winthrop then had two goals from Jane Tattersall to take a 4-2 lead, but Rogers responded with a goal to pull Longwood within one.
Each time, though, Winthrop had the answer, and Longwood never could close closer than one. Rogers had her second goal of the match to trim it to 7-6 with 5:07 left in the half, but that was as close as the Lancers would get. Winthrop reeled off three straight goals to take a 10-6 lead at the break.
Hirst put Longwood on the board in the third, but Winthrop went on an 11-1 run that extended early into the fourth quarter to put the game effectively out of reach.
Amelia Carlile made her 300
th save during the game for the Lancers.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Not our best day," said Longwood Head Coach
Dwayne Hicks. "We knew the game would be tough, but we were looking for a much better outcome. We just haven't been able to figure out the draw and getting more possessions."
