CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Longwood softball team blasted five home runs in a 4-0, 13-7 doubleheader sweep at Queens on Tuesday to run its winning streak to three games.
Senior right-hander
Er'ron Burton limited the Royals to just a single with one out in third inning of the opener, struck out eight and retired the final 14 batters she faced for her second consecutive midweek complete-game shutout.
In the nightcap, the Lancers drilled three homers — including two in the ninth inning — to finish off a late-inning comeback for the sweep of their former Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference foes.
"Could not be more pleased with their grit and fight," Longwood head coach
Dr. Megan Brown said. "These are the types of games they have worked so hard all year to be able to finish. They stayed together and it took a full team effort. Very, very proud of them."
Redshirt sophomore
Maryanna Guy smashed two homers in the second game, the biggest one a go-ahead, three-run shot down the left-field line with one out in the top of the ninth, putting Longwood (17-27) ahead, 10-7.
Naleya Bridges, who also hit a solo homer to center field in the first game of the day, added, a three-run blast of her own later in the frame for the final margin.
Longwood built a 5-2 lead by the top of the fifth inning of the second game before Queens (14-30) rallied to tie it at 5-5 with two out in the bottom of the fifth as Lauren Byrd hit a three-run homer off of
Erin Kirkland.
Queens grabbed a 6-5 lead in the sixth when Madyson Daughtry scored on a dropped third strike and wild pitch by Kirkland with two out in the inning. Then, down to its last out in the top of the seventh, the Lancers fought back to take a 7-6 advantage on Guy's first homer of the game and second of the day. This one cleared the left-field fence on a 2-1 pitch from Taylor Jones.
Olivia Thornton led off the bottom of the seventh with a game-tying solo shot to right-center field off of Kirkland, making it a 7-7 game, prior to the Lancers exploding for six runs in the top of the ninth for the win.
Morgan Strickland (4-7) earned the win after starting and lasting just one inning. She returned the circle for the final three frames, finishing with one hit, three walks and one unearned run allowed in four innings.
Brooke Bennett collected three hits in the opener while
Avery Drake and
Avery Jefferson each had three knocks in game two.
The Lancers are right back at it Wednesday against UNCG at Bank of the James Park. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m., on ESPN+.
