McIntyre, Lang-Montgomery Headline Five Lancers Picked for Year-End Big South Honors

Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year lead No. 2 seed Longwood in to tournament

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On the heels of the Longwood women's basketball team's 20-win regular season, five Lancers earned Big South Conference honors, the league announced Tuesday.

Graduate guard Kiki McIntyre was named Big South Defensive Player of the Year and claimed a spot on the all-conference second team, while third-year head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery collected Big South Coach of the Year honors.

Sophomore guard Amor Harris also earned second-team honors and senior Mariah Wilson received honorable-mention plaudits.

Sophomore guard Nalani Simmons was Longwood's representative on the Big South All-Academic Team.

With the Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year recognition for McIntyre and Lang-Montgomery, respectively, the Lancers have now won major year-end Big South awards for just the second time in their time in the league. Akila Smith was named both the Player and Defensive Player of the Year in the Lancers' Big South championship season of 2021-22.

Lang-Montgomery has orchestrated an 11-win improvement over both of her first two seasons in Farmville to earn the first Big South Coach of Year honor in the history of the program.

McIntyre enters the tournament as the NCAA leader in total steals (121) and steals per game (4.03). The Boston, Mass., native set Longwood's all-time single-season steals record this season and tied for the fifth most steals in a game in the NCAA this season, swiping a career-high 10 versus Presbyterian (Jan. 2). She has collected at least five steals in a game 10 times.

One of three Lancers currently averaging double-figure points at 10.1 per game, McIntyre is also third in the Big South in assists per game (3.4).

McIntyre was named Co-Big South Player of the Week (Jan. 6) and also to the Shirley Duncan Classic all-tournament team, leading Longwood to three-game sweep of its home tournament with South Carolina State, William & Mary and McNeese Dec. 6-8.

Harris is in the midst of a breakout sophomore season, leading the team in scoring at 11 points per game, while going 144-for-294 (49 percent) from the floor and 36.1 percent from 3-point range.

The Alexandria, Va., product was named Big South Player of the Week after helping the Lancers sweep the Shirley Duncan Classic, where she earned MVP honors and a spot on the all-tournament team. Her 24 field goals and 51 total points scored in the tournament were the second and 10th most, respectively, in the NCAA for that week.

Plus, she has been clutch all season. She hit a game-winning 3-pointer at Charleston Southern (Jan. 4) and a winning 18-footer against Radford (Jan. 22).

Wilson has enjoyed an expanded role this year after appearing in only 60 games over three seasons at Towson. This year, she has appeared in all 30 contests, starting 23, and is third in the Big South in steals (69) and fourth in steals per game (2.30), figures that are 39th and 65th overall, respectively, in the NCAA.

A Lancaster, Pa., native, Wilson has swiped at least four steals in a game eight times with a career-high eight in a Dec. 18 win at Webber International. She is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game.

Wilson was named Co-Big South Player of the Week on Jan. 13 and has scored in double figures in 16 games with a career-high 23 points in a win at UNC Asheville on Jan. 8.

Simmons, who carries a 3.942 GPA as a sophomore in business administration, has averaged 1.3 points and 0.6 rebounds in 18 games off the bench this season. She was a Big South Presidential Honor Roll recipient last season.

Lang-Montgomery has guided the Lancers to the fourth-most steals per game in the NCAA this season at 14.1, while Longwood has forced the most turnovers per contest (24.87) in all of Division I. Longwood also leads the Big South in no fewer than nine statistical categories as a team.

Lang-Montgomery helped her team to its best start in its Big South history this season at 6-0 while engineering an eight-game winning streak from Dec. 18 to Jan. 22.

Second-seeded Longwood (20-10) begins its journey through the Big South tournament Thursday at 6 p.m., against No. 7 USC Upstate at Freedom Hall Civic Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
