CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Junior right-hander
Maggie Chapin scattered six hits and three walks over six innings, but No. 23 Virginia plated an unearned run in the third and tacked on insurance tally in the sixth for a 2-0 win at Palmer Park on Tuesday.
Chapin (3-6) struck out six in her third complete game of the season, using 85 pitches. Freshman catcher
Brooke Bennett went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk out of the third spot in the batting order to lead the offense.
"Very pleased with the growth from last week with our team," said Longwood head coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "We talk about it every day. Move the needle, keep growing, stay with the process. Proud of our young ladies for staying committed and for their hard work and dedication."
Chapin kept Virginia (16-5) off the scoreboard until the bottom of third, when, with two out and runners on first and second, M.C. Eaton hit a grounder that second baseman
Avery Jefferson threw away. Kelly Ayer, who had reached with a bunt single, scored from second on the play.
The Lancers got the leadoff batter on in the top of the sixth as Bennett singed to third base, but a fielder's choice sandwiched by a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
Virginia added to its lead when Kelsey Hackett singled to left field with one out and Kailyn Jones tripled to right on a 1-2 pitch to make it 2-0.
The Lancers (5-13) went in order in the seventh as the Cavaliers sealed the victory.
Julia Cuozzo earned the pitching win with two innings of one-hit relief of Savannah Henley, who re-entered to pick up her first save of the season.
The Lancers are back in action Saturday and Sunday in Fairfax, Va., to face Ohio and George Mason.
