Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
VCU took advantage of Lancer mistakes in the first that extended the inning to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Trent Adelman hit a two-run homer to cap the scoring.
Â
However, it was the second inning that turned the tide. VCU plated 10 runs in an offensive onslaught to put the game effectively out of reach.
Â
Longwood finally got on the board in the fourth thanks to RBI singles from Carter and Tufts, but the VCU bullpen tightened up after that point.
Â
Nick Frers (1-1) picked up the win for VCU. He held Longwood to one hit in three scoreless innings while giving up one walk against two strikeouts.
Â
Ethan Plesser (0-2) took the loss for Longwood. The lefthander gave up eight runs, but only three were earned, on three hits and two walks.
Â
UP NEXT:
Â
Longwood returns to Farmville and the friendly confines of Buddy Bolding Stadium for a three-game Big South series against Gardner-Webb this weekend. The series opener will be on Friday night at 6 p.m. on ESPN+, and it is Baseball Bingo Night at the ballpark. In addition, the Amish Traditions food truck will be there.
