BLACKSBURG, Va. — No. 16/14 Virginia Tech swept a doubleheader from the Longwood softball team on Wednesday, winning 10-0 in five innings and 7-1 at Tech Softball Park.
Virginia Tech (25-5) scored all 10 runs over they first two innings of the opener before the plating six unanswered runs in the nightcap for a sweep.
"Proud of our fight in game 2. Lots of small growths from game 1 to 2," said Longwood head coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "Saw improvements that we have been working on in practice. Have to continue to sharpen our adjustments in game."
The Hokies scored four runs in the first inning of the first game. Michelle Chatfield lined a triple to right-center field with no one out, scoring Cori McMillan for the lead prior to a run-scoring single by Bre Peck and a two-run base hit to right center from Emily LeGette.
Virginia Tech added six runs on seven hits in the second inning, highlighted by a leadoff homer run to center field by Jayden Jones and two-run blast from LeGette that bookended the frame.
Freshmen
Brooke Bennett and
Bailey Bucholz had the Longwood hits, singles in the first and fourth innings respectively.
Er'ron Burton (1-3) started and registered four outs. She gave up seven hits, eight runs and two walks before giving way to
Cierra Gawryluk for the final 2 2/3 innings.
McMillan started the bottom of the first of the second game with a home run to give her team na early 1-0 advantage. Longwood (6-21) tied it in the third. After a
Sophia Knock walk, Bennett doubled down the left-field line, scoring kick all the way from first with one out.
Rachel Castine helped Virginia Tech regain the lead with a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the frame after Chatfield doubled to left.
The Hokies then put the game out of reach with five runs over the fifth and sixth innings, including homers from Kylie Aldridge and LeGette, for the victory.
Morgan Strickland (0-4) went the distance in the circle for the Lancers, allowing eight hits and six earned runs with three strikeouts and three walks.
Bennett was 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace Longwood's offense, which finished with six hits.
Longwood returns to action next Wednesday at Liberty. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., on ESPN+.
