ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Longwood softball team fell, 10-0, in five innings Friday at Winthrop to open Big South Conference play.
The Eagles (16-10, 1-0) broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the third and eight more in the fourth to bring the game to a halt.
The Lancers loaded the bases in the top of the first on a
Sophia Knock walk,
Maggie Hiatt single and
Avery Miller hit by pitch, but Winthrop's Megan Powell got
Mary Zepeda to pop a ball up on the infield to get out of trouble.
Senior right-hander
Er'ron Burton kept the Eagles off the scoreboard until the fourth when Peyton Bryden drove a 2-1 pitch with two out over the fence in center field for a two-run home run.
Winthrop sent 13 batters to plate in the bottom of the fourth, scoring eight runs on six hits and two errors. Powell and Tia Beckham each provided two-run singles for the Eagles in the frame.
Longwood (6-17, 0-1) used four pitchers to get out of the inning, including Burton (1-1),
Maggie Chapin,
Erin Kirkland and
Cierra Gawryluk.
Bryden and Beckham each had two of Winthrop's eight hits with Powell, Bryden and Beckham driving in two runs apiece.
Brooke Bennett and Hiatt collected base hits for the Lancers on the day.
The teams close the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m., doubleheader.
