BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — The Longwood men's tennis team fell, 7-0, at Gardner-Webb on Friday to begin Big South Conference play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (15-3, 2-0 Big South) won all but one match in straight sets, earning their fourth consecutive victory.
Gardner-Webb took the doubles point as Alex Lepine and Johan Van Wijk topped
Alejandro Uribe and
Marko Mrdak, 6-1, on court three before Numa Lemieux-Monette and Kaua Cresoni defeated
Petar Belosevic and
Petter Lindquist, 6-3, on court two.
Boyd Schreiber opened singles action with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Lindquist to make it 2-0 for GWU. Eduardo Dias then beat
Timéo Puech, 6-2, 6-3 on No. 1.
Gardner-Webb clinched the match when Alexandre Bergeron defeated Uribe at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2.
Kim Niethammer got past
Mauricio Gonzalez Paiva, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 while Lemieux-Monette beat Belosevic, 7-5, 6-1, on court three.
Mrdak topped Lapine in the first set of the No. 5 bout, but Lapine bounced back to take the final two sets, 6-1 and 1-0 (4), and the match.
With the loss, Longwood drops to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the Big South.
The Lancers are back in action Sunday at Davidson. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
