Longwood Falls to Ragin’ Cajuns, 8-1

Lancers bested by complete-game pitching, Louisiana offense

LAFAYETTE, La. — Louisiana freshman right-hander Mallory Wheeler scattered five hits and struck out four in an 8-1 complete-game Louisiana victory over the Longwood softball team to close the 39th Annual Louisiana Classics on Sunday.

Wheeler (1-0) struck out four and walked two, using 100 pitches to earn her first collegiate win. The Ragin' Cajuns, who are receiving votes in the NFCA Coaches Poll, scored three runs each in the first and sixth innings for the win.

Cecilia Vasquez and Laney Credeur drove in three runs apiece for Louisiana (3-2).

The Lancers loaded the bases twice on the day including in the top of the sixth when Sophia Knock scooted a ball through the right side of the infield with two out, scoring Avery Jefferson to get Longwood on the board. Wheeler plunked Jefferson with a 2-0 pitch and she scampered to third when Brooke Bennett's single was misplayed in right field.

Longwood (2-3) jammed the the bases again in the seventh on hits from Naleya Bridges and Natalia Colone bookending a throwing error from Louisiana third baseman Sam Roe on a ball hit by Berkeley Whitten.

The Ragin' Cajuns, however, worked out of trouble, getting Avery Drake to bounce into a fielder's choice and Wheeler struck out Jefferson to seal the win.

Maddie Hayden and Roe each secured a pair of Louisiana's eight hits. Bridges collected a multi-hit outing of her own — the second in as many days — going 2-for-3 for Longwood.

Erin Kirkland (1-2) absorbed the loss in the circle for the Lancers, surrendering two hits, one walk and three earned runs. She was unable to escape the first inning, recording two outs before giving way to Cierra Gawryluk, Mallory Sanders and Morgan Strickland.

Knock led the Lancers, finishing the weekend hitting 6-for-12, with two doubles, two homers, four walks and seven RBIs.

Longwood travels to Athens, Ga., next Friday-Sunday for Georgia's Red & Black Showcase where it will face Michigan, Michigan State, Western Carolina and the host Bulldogs.
