FARMVILLE, Va. — Trailing, 3-1, to Hampton in its home opener, the Longwood women's tennis team came all the way back to sneak past the Pirates, 4-3, for its third consecutive win Saturday on the New Lancer Courts.
Sophomore
Phoebe Mitchell dropped the first set to Masa Mitic in her No. 4 singles, match, 2-6, but came roaring back to win the second and third, 7-5 and 6-0, clinching the match for Longwood (4-3).
The Lancers claimed the doubles point as the Nos. 2 and 3 pairs were victorious.
Alexandra Magia and
Feline van Eijkelenburg topped Meiri Okuwaki and Mitic, 6-1, on court two while Mitchell and
Oriana Izarra beat Melis Sakiroglu and Jewel Aston-Greene, 6-3, to clinch that point.
Hampton (1-2) rallied to win on courts two, three and one, respectively, to build its lead.
Alexis Broderick cut into the deficit, defeating Aston-Greene, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6. Magia then tied the dual with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sakiroglu at No. 5.
The Lancers return to action Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting North Carolina Central. First serve is 2 p.m.
