CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Junior right-hander
Maggie Chapin twirled her second consecutive complete-game win, lifting the Longwood softball team to its third win in a row, 3-1, over Delaware on Monday at Virginia's Mizuno Classic at Palmer Park.
Chapin, who retired the first nine batters in order, scattered five hits, two walks and one earned run with seven strikeouts for the win. The Longwood offense pushed across three unearned runs and hung on to top Delaware (4-6).
Sophia Knock went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored to lead the offense.
The Lancers dropped the second game of the day to the host Cavaliers, 10-0, in five innings. UVA, which improved to 10-5 overall, belted four home runs off of Longwood pitching.
"Very pleased how we came out in game one," said Longwood head coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "Proud of their fight and resilience. Two tough opponents in the same day. Lots of good lessons learned that we will need as we continue through this season."
Knock led off the top of the second in the opener with a double to left field before pinch runner
Mary Zepeda was sacrificed to third. Following a strikeout,
Peyton Simmons reached on a fielding error by Ellie Talley at third base, allowing Zepeda to score the game's first run with one out.
Delaware loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but Longwood worked out of trouble as
Peyton Simmons threw out Katie Scheivert from left field advancing to third for the first out. Longwood ended the inning retiring the Blue Hens on a sacrifice bunt and ground out, respectively.
Delaware threatened again in the fifth, putting two on with one out. Chapin, however, got a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.
The Lancers extended their lead in the top of the seventh. Knock started the frame with a single to left and
Natalia Colone walked. With two out,
Sarah Terrell reached on an error by Scheivert at second that plated both runners.
Delaware broke through in its half of the inning with two out when Ryleigh Thomas hit an RBI single, scoring Morgan Hess. Following a Scheivert walk, to put runners on first and third, Chloe Blantz, though, swung at a 2-2 pitch from Chapin to end the the game.
With the win against Delaware, which is coached by 2005 Longwood alumna, Jen Steele, Chapin improved to 3-3 on the season.
UD's Billie Kerwood fell to 3-3 with a complete game of her own, surrendering five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. All three runs she yielded were unearned.
Jade Hylton hit two homers for the Cavaliers against Longwood, a pair of two-run blasts in the second and third innings, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored. M.C. Eaton also hit a two-run homer to left in the first and Kelsey Hackett completed the barrage of long balls with a pinch-hit homer in the fourth.
Morgan Strickland was saddled with the loss to fall to 0-1 after recording one out.

Julia Cuozzo (1-0) went four innings for UVA to earn the win. The Lancers' hits — all singles —came from Knock,
Brooke Bennett and Terrell.
Longwood returns to action this weekend at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky., playing Northwestern, Central Michigan and Louisville.
