BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — The Longwood women's basketball team shot better than 50 percent from the floor for the fifth time this season and limited Gardner-Webb to just three made field goals in the first half in a 75-46 victory Big South Conference victory at Paul Porter Arena on Wednesday.
The Lancers led from start to finish and had three score in double figures — including a career-high 14 points from freshman
Lili Booker off the bench — as Longwood improved to 18-9 overall and 9-4 in the league with its second consecutive win and third straight against Gardner-Webb.
"This is a night where I thought we got solid minutes and contributions from our starters and from our bench, and so I was really impressed with the overall effort for 40 minutes," said Longwood head coach
Erika Lang-Montgomery.
Longwood shot 52.9 percent, knocking down 18-of-34 shots from the field, in the second half to pull away after going 14-for-28 before halftime. The Lancers held GWU to 27.7 percent from the floor and just 13 field goals — a season-best defensive effort against Division I opposition.
"I thought our defense was solid," Lang-Montgomery said. "Particularly in the second quarter to hold them without a field goal. I thought we disrupted what they wanted to do on the offensive end."
Gardner-Webb, which fell to 10-15 overall and 7-6 in conference play with the loss, misfired on its first nine shots of the game and did not make a field goal in the second quarter in 13 attempts, helping Longwood earn its first win in Boiling Springs since the 2020-21 season. With the victory, the Lancers also completed a regular-season series sweep of the Runnin' Bulldogs for the first time in 12 seasons.
Longwood drained half of its 12 3-pointers on the night, led by
Mariah Wilson's 3-for-3 effort from behind the arc. She finished with 13 points and three rebounds in 18 minutes in a reserve role.
Ten of the 11 players to see game action scored on the night with
Malea Brown going for 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Kiki McIntyre tallied seven points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists, while
JaMya Robinson had a season-high seven points to go with four rebounds and three steals.
The Lancers turned 18 Gardner-Webb turnovers into 30 points and got 42 points from the bench in the win. Longwood carried a 40-30 advantage in rebounds, including pulling down 12 offensive boards.
"We outscored them all four quarters," Lang-Montgomery said. "I think we had a solid night. Road wins are tough, and this was a big one for us."
Now, Longwood turns its attention to UNC Asheville, which comes to the Joan Perry Brock Center Saturday at 6 p.m. The Lancers are set to for their annual Play4Kay Pink Out to benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. It will also be Alumnae Night as former Lancers' women's basketball players return to Farmville.
