FARMVILLE, Va. – A tight-knit, crisp VCU women's lacrosse team controlled the match against Longwood on Tuesday afternoon in the home opener for the Lancers (0-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

VCU got off to a quick start, and Mason Whitmore had a hat trick in the opening quarter while the visitors had five different players score in the opening 15 minutes.

Whitmore led all scorers with four goals in the match, and Ashley Karn added two goals and three assists on the day for VCU.

Longwood's defense settled down and proved a tougher nut to crack in the second and forced eight turnovers, but VCU's defense returned the favor by taking advantage of nine Lancer turnovers.

Cybella Smith made 13 saves, including four in both the second and third quarters, for Longwood.

Kendra DeFilippo put the Lancers on the board in the third period, but VCU's offense was in a rhythm to extend the lead to double figures.

Mikaela Cook and Ellie Rumbaugh both scored late in the fourth for the Lancers.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"It was a tough loss," said Longwood Head Coach Dwayne Hicks. "I know we're a much better team than how we're playing right now. We're beating ourselves with penalties and turnovers. Cybella made a lot of good saves in her first game of the season. We just can't play that much defense and compete at this level. We'll have to work on controlling the ball more in our offense."

UP NEXT:

Longwood hits the road and heads to George Mason on Wednesday, February 26 to open a two-game road swing.
