OXFORD, Miss. — No. 14/13 Ole Miss received double figures from four different players, including Cotie McMahon with 29 points, on its way to a 102-50 win over the Longwood women's basketball team at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion on Monday.
The Rebels used runs of 14-1 and 16-0 in the first half, running out to a 49-25 advantage at halftime and then posted a 31-point third quarter — its biggest of the season — for further separation.
McMahon was 11-for-18 from the floor, also adding a game-high nine rebounds, to lead Ole Miss (5-0).
After a slow start from Longwood (4-3), the Lancers closed the first quarter with a 9-0 run over the final five minutes, cutting a 17-point Rebels' lead down to eight at 24-16 heading to the second quarter. Amor Harris scored six of her team-leading 11 points in the run, while Jesstynie Scott added a 3-pointer.
"I felt better about the way we performed," Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery said. "I thought it was a better response from Thursday night. And we grew in a lot of ways, a lot that we can learn from, but I thought we grew.
"I thought we rebounded the ball better. I thought we executed some things offensively. Not necessarily reflective of the score, but I thought we did some things in moments, got some steals, had some rotations defensively that disrupted what they wanted to do offensively."
A JaMya Robinson bucket at the 3:06 mark before the break temporarily stopped another prolonged scoring run for the Rebels while Malea Brown pulled down an offensive board and knocked down a triple at the halftime buzzer as the Rebels took their 24-point edge into the locker room.
A quick seven points early in the third keyed the big third period for Ole Miss, which shot better than 52 percent in the stanza on with 10 makes, rallying for an 80-43 bulge with 10 minutes to play despite the Lancers posting 18 points of their own in the quarter on 43 percent from the floor. Frances Ulysse had all six of her points on the night for the Lancers in the third.
Ole Miss did much of its damage on the inside, grabbing 20 of its 54 rebounds off of the offensive glass and scoring 58 points in the paint and 14 from second opportunities.
The Rebels also created 25 Longwood turnovers, converting them into 35 points.
Scott and Brown each finished with nine points for Longwood, which also received five points from Jaci Bolden. Jasmine Peaks chipped in four points, three rebounds and three assists, as well.
Christeen Iwuala tallied 14 points for Ole Miss, while Debreasha Powe had 13 and Caitin Peterson 12.
Longwood next heads to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Clasico. The Lancers will face 2025 Postseason WNIT champion Buffalo on Thanksgiving Day at 3:30 p.m.
We're excited for the week," Lang-Montgomery said. "A big opportunity ahead. Let me just say this — just grateful for the opportunity to be able to go to the Puerto Puerto Rico Clasico. It is some great competition and looking forward to see how we match up against Buffalo and Stephen F. Austin."
