HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams felt their way into the match early on.
Presbyterian (3-7-2, 0-3-1 Big South) created a good chance in the 33rd minute with a sequence of three shots in less than a minute. Curtis saved the first, Meghan Piazza blocked the third, and Taylor Kamalsky saved one off the line to keep Presbyterian off the board.
Longwood hit the post two minutes later and created two more chances quickly thereafter, but the two teams went into the half scoreless.
After the half, the Longwood defense was able to hold the Blue Hose to only three shots, all coming in early.
Meanwhile, the Lancer offense got stronger as the game went on. Piazza forced a save, and Schultz had two shots in the 82nd minute.
In the 84th minute, Karleigh Minson played it out to Schultz, who crossed it to Fischer in front of the goal. Fischer calmly put it home for her sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Lancer defense kept Presbyterian from getting a shot off afterwards.

WHAT THEY SAID
"It took a lot of grit", said Head Coach Todd Dyer. "I told the girls, 'We just have to find a way,' because our soccer wasn't very good today. I thought Presbyterian was, and it was just a matter of working through it. At the end, we told them an ugly win's better than a pretty loss, and that couldn't be truer than it was today. Happy with the shutout, but we dodged some bullets, as did they. But it was a typical Big South Conference game decided by one goal. We just happened to get the goal, but both teams had pretty good chances."

"She's really talented", said Dyer about Fischer. "She's really hungry for goals. She's not afraid of the moment; she wants to be right in the thick of everything. Her timing and feel for things in and around the penalty area are something that I certainly can't teach. She's always a threat up there, so you leave her on as long as you can, and it worked out today. She's got a natural gift in terms of time and spacing, and when things get crazy in the box, she's able to work through it and find her chance."

"We've had to deal with the loss of Berni [Wayland], but I think Harper [Morrison] has slid right in there and certainly done her part", said Dyer about the Longwood defense. "We dodged a couple of bullets in the game, but I think more than anything, they're committed to earning that clean sheet. And we want to keep the game in front of us, we want to win battles, we want to win blocked shots and serves, and for the most part, that group does that. Certainly, we can clean it up and do an even better job back there, but they're just a very tough, gritty, resilient battle battle-tested back line. And the more situations you work through like they have, the more comfortable you become in those moments, so they continue to grow as a unit, and another shutout today is a payoff for that."

"We recover, we rest, we reboot, and then we go down there and put up a big fight", said Dyer about their upcoming game against USC Upstate. "We like playing against Upstate and especially them big that reigning champion, top of the league, it's easy to get up for that game. They play good soccer. It'll be a challenge, but it's a good environment and it's a good opportunity that we look forward to right now."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
  • Prior to Fischer's goal, the two teams had gone 293 minutes without scoring after two 0-0 ties in 2024
  • Longwood did not give up any corners to Presbyterian in the second half
  • Curtis earned her 20th career shutout and 11th as a Lancer
  • This is Longwood's third shutout in conference play
