BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Gardner-Webb scored late in each half to remain undefeated in Big South action with a 2-0 victory over the Longwood men's soccer team on Friday at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, who entered play 20th in the College Soccer News top 25 and 23rd in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings, improved to 9-1-1 and 3-0-0 in the league with the win.
Gardner-Webb scored in the 42nd minute when Samson Kpardeh combined for a neat 1-2 passing play with Javan Ochieng to make it 1-0. Kpardeh received the ball before charging forward and slipping one past Longwood goalkeeper Max Hinke along the ground.
Despite the goal, the Lancers (2-6-2, 0-3-0) had a handful of solid chances in the opening 45 minutes.
In the 20th minute, Benjamin Ferrero found himself behind the Gardner-Webb defense with only Alan Horrocks to beat. Ferrero, however, put the ball directly into the goalkeeper.
Then, in the 33rd minute, Brando Bedolla was spilled just outside the box. He bent the ensuing free kick around a four-man wall to the top-left corner, but Horrocks got a glove on it to guide the ball away.
The Lancers had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 52nd minute when Bedolla drew a foul, this time just inside the box on the left. Stepping up to the spot, Jesus Macaya pushed his penalty attempt wide to the right.
Gardner-Webb put the match out of reach in the 84th minute as Will Cain's service from outside the box found the head of Jaylen Orr, catching Hinke going the other direction, as the ball glanced off the right post and in.
Horrocks finished with finished four saves, including three in the first half, to pick up his eighth clean sheet of the season. Hinke made six stops for Longwood.
The Lancers are back in action Tuesday at Virginia Tech. Kickoff on ACC Network Extra is set for 5 p.m.
