HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Mountaineers stayed tied for first in the league standings behind two goals to close quarters, which offset Mooldijk's big-time performance in the cage for the Lancers.

The first quarter featured the two teams trading blows in the midfield prior to a late penalty corner for the visitors. Boekaar played it forward and Sophia Baxter deflected it into the cage with 32 seconds to play in the period for a 1-0 Appalachian State lead.

Longwood battened down the hatches though, and the defense kept the Lancers afloat for the rest of the second quarter.

Meanwhile, the offense exited the half with new life and pushed forward to earn a penalty corner in the 36th minute. Jane Ramsay inserted the ball to Tierney, who took a step to her right and blasted it home to tie the match at one all.

However, with five seconds to go in the third, Boekaar weaved through the back line and found a sliver of daylight to give her side a lead it would not relinquish.

Early in the fourth, Sarah Perkins scored to extend the lead to two goals. The Lancers pushed forward afterwards but couldn't find the equalizer.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We played a hard fought game," said Longwood Head Coach Miranda Rigg. "We just need to clean up a few things and work on generating more on our attack. Overall, I'm really proud of our efforts to make in-game adjustments and have a better defensive structure."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • Mooldijk made at least 10 saves for the sixth time this season.
  • Tierney scored her third goal of the season
