Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
The Mountaineers stayed tied for first in the league standings behind two goals to close quarters, which offset Mooldijk's big-time performance in the cage for the Lancers.
Â
The first quarter featured the two teams trading blows in the midfield prior to a late penalty corner for the visitors. Boekaar played it forward and Sophia Baxter deflected it into the cage with 32 seconds to play in the period for a 1-0 Appalachian State lead.
Â
Longwood battened down the hatches though, and the defense kept the Lancers afloat for the rest of the second quarter.
Â
Meanwhile, the offense exited the half with new life and pushed forward to earn a penalty corner in the 36
th minute.
Jane Ramsay inserted the ball to Tierney, who took a step to her right and blasted it home to tie the match at one all.
Â
However, with five seconds to go in the third, Boekaar weaved through the back line and found a sliver of daylight to give her side a lead it would not relinquish.
Â
Early in the fourth, Sarah Perkins scored to extend the lead to two goals. The Lancers pushed forward afterwards but couldn't find the equalizer.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We played a hard fought game," said Longwood Head Coach
Miranda Rigg. "We just need to clean up a few things and work on generating more on our attack. Overall, I'm really proud of our efforts to make in-game adjustments and have a better defensive structure."
Â
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Â
- Mooldijk made at least 10 saves for the sixth time this season.
