HOW IT HAPPENED:

Both teams created several opportunities in the first but couldn't slot it home.

Karleigh Minson had two shots early in the first half, her first being in the 14th minute off target and her second in the 21st, forcing goalkeeper Mia Vrataric to dive for a save.

Sara Curtis made a couple of saves late in the first, and the Longwood defense, led by Sydney Robertson and Harper Morrison, were able to hold off the other three shots by the Eagles.

After the half, Winthrop put up eight shots, only three of which were on goal.

The deciding goal came from Mia Silber on a penalty in the 79th minute.

Claire Schultz had the closest call for the Lancers in the 50th minute with a shot that was merely inches off to the left.

Longwood (6-7-2, 3-3 Big South) had three shots on goal, one coming off a sequence in the 87th minute from Sam Fischer, where she had a blocked shot, and was able to recover to force a diving save.

Taylor Hoag had a last-minute shot with two seconds left to the center of the goal, forcing one final save before the match ended.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We were outcoached, outworked, and outplayed…in that order", said Longwood Head Coach Tood Dyer. "The penalty kick obviously decided the outcome, but that was a fair result for both teams. Credit to Winthrop for going on the road and getting the job done. Now we have to find a way to do the same thing in Charleston this weekend."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • Minson led the team with three shots, followed by Fischer and Jones with two shots
  • Both goalkeepers were equal with five saves apiece, both saving two in the first and three in the second

UP NEXT:

Longwood heads back on the road to compete against Charleston Southern for the second-to-last game in the regular season on Oct. 18, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
