Lancers Grab 64-52 Home Win over Gardner-Webb

Four in double figures help Longwood to 12th win in 14 games

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood women's basketball team made half of its shots in the second half and four players scored in double figures to claim a 64-52 victory over Gardner-Webb at the Joan Perry Brock Center on Wednesday.

Amor Harris scored a game-high-tying 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including three 3-pointers, to pace Longwood to its 12th win in 14 games.

The win improves the Lancers to 16-6 overall and 7-1 in the Big South Conference as LU closes the month of January 7-1 to remain on top of the league standings, one full game ahead of idle High Point.

"I thought tonight we did a great job of recovering from our offensive woes on Saturday," said Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. "That's what I was really looking to see, what our response would be."

Frances Ulysse scored 10 points, adding four rebounds and four assists, while Otaifo Esenabhalu collected 10 points and seven boards and Malea Brown chipped in 10 points, four boards and two steals. Kiki McIntyre finished with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The Lancers connected on 15 shots from the field after halftime, extending an eight-point lead at the break to as many a 17 with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game.

Longwood shot 44.4 percent on the night and posted 18 assists as a team with three players recording at least four each. Mariah Wilson tallied a game-best five.

"I'm just looking at the stat sheet. Three players with four assists each. That's pretty special," Lang-Montgomery said. "That's really good team basketball. As you go into the second half of conference, you want to be playing your best basketball."

Defensively, Longwood limited Gardner-Webb (7-13, 4-4) and Preseason Big South Player of the Year Ashley Hawkins to 37.5 percent from the floor. Hawkins paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with 15 points, more than three points per game below her season average.

"I thought we did a good job of scrambling, making shots hard for them," Lang-Montgomery said. "I also thought we rebounded well tonight. Didn't give them any second opportunities."

Longwood led for all but five minutes, not trailing after the two-minute mark in the first quarter. The Lancers were ahead, 14-11, after the first period, 29-11, at halftime and 45-33 after three.

"I just thought there was some good continuity and consistency tonight in our offense," Lang-Montgomery said.

Longwood, which won the rebounding battle by a 36-31 margin, turned 19 Gardner-Webb turnovers into 21 points, collected 13 offensive boards, translating them into 16 second-chance points and scored 38 in the paint.

Next up, Charleston Southern comes to town Saturday at 2 p.m., as the second half of conference play begins.

"Our job as coaches is to continue to challenge them in practice to prepare them for what's next," said Lang-Montgomery. "Stay in the moment, continue to work on those things that we want to be able to do well this second half of conference and hopefully into March."
