LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Longwood women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision at Liberty to begin the 2025 season on Friday.
Liberty (1-1) swept doubles action with Daniella O'Neill and Maria Turchetto topping
Karina Rizvanova and
Phoebe Mitchell, 6-2, on court one, Sadie Daavettila and Yu-Yun Chen defeating
Alexandra Magia and
Feline van Eijkelenburg, 6-4, at No. 2 and Anika Lemus and Yoanna Radulova beating
Oriana Izarra and
Elizaveta Gnilozubova, 6-3 on No. 3.
The Flames opened singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win by Celina Joseph on court six for a 2-0 lead. Chen followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Rizvanova at No. 2. Radulova clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 over Izarra on court three.
Both van Eijkelenburg and Mitchell were up in their singles matches when the dual ended.
On court one, van Eijkelenburg won the first set against O'Neill, 7-5, and was leading, 3-2, in the second. Mitchell won her first set versus Daavettila at No. 4, 6-4, and led, 4-3, in the second.
Longwood (0-1) is back in action Saturday at 9 a.m., against Elon at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
