FARMVILLE, Va. — Four Longwood women's basketball players scored double figures to stay perfect in Big South Conference action with a 77-59 victory over Winthrop at the Joan Perry Brock Center on Saturday.
The win, Longwood's sixth consecutive and ninth in 10 games overall, improved the Lancers to 4-0 in the league for just the second time in history, joining the 2021-22 conference championship team. LU sits alone atop the Big South standings following the win and a 64-52 Gardner-Webb victory over High Point.
"It feels pretty darn good," said Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. "We're excited to be in first place by ourselves right now and we know that we can't rest. There's still a lot of work to be done, but we get to celebrate today and tomorrow."
Longwood (13-5) shot over 50 percent from the field for the second straight game and third time in 2024-25. As they did Wednesday at UNC Asheville, the Lancers scored the game's first 10 points, ran out to a big first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Mariah Wilson scored a team-best 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while Amor Harris added 16, Kiki McIntyre 13 and Frances Ulysse 11 off the bench. Longwood shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) for the night and was 9-for-21 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range.Â
"I saw some resilience," Lang-Montgomery said of the Lancers on Saturday. "I saw a lot of fight in the beginning. I loved how we came out to start the game, very aggressive just took the lead and didn't relinquish it."
Winthrop was just 2-of-15 from the floor in the first quarter as Longwood held a 25-7 advantage after 10 minutes. Harris punctuated Longwood's opening frame with a trey to beat the buzzer after LU began the game up, 18-1, on Winthrop (9-8, 3-1).
Jaci Bolden knocked down a triple of her own to begin the second quarter and Ulysse followed with a pair of layups as the lead grew to 32-7 at the 7:21 mark. Longwood led, 38-16, at the break.
The Eagles climbed back into it in the third quarter, connecting on their first 10 shots of the period, to pull within 49-38 with 2:29 remaining in the stanza.
"Winthrop did a great job coming out that second half," said Lang-Montgomery. "I mean, they couldn't miss the third quarter. They literally didn't miss the third quarter except for one shot, and so we took their punches and we were able to hold steady and regain our composure in that last quarter."
Ulysse later hit her first career 3-pointer to restore a 14-point edge. LU was up, 55-42, at the end of three quarters.
Longwood did not lead by less than 12 points in the final 10 minutes despite Winthrop staying hot from the field. The visitors were 5-of-9 in the frame, though, Harris scored 11 in the period to offset the Eagles' effort.
McIntyre, the NCAA leader in total steals entering the day, added six more to her total and dished four assists. Wilson came up with four steals, as well. Longwood out rebounded Winthrop, 31-27, and posted 20 assists. It marked the fifth time this season the Lancers had at least that many helpers, doing so for the fourth time in six games.
"I think that's area that we're improving," Lang-Montgomery said of sharing the ball. "We knew their zone was going to challenge us. We knew we were going to have to move the ball. Eventually we were finding the open play and being able to knock down those shots."
Amourie Porter scored a game-high 18 points for Winthrop and Ronaltha Marc had 14.
Longwood next hits the road to face High Point in the Ruben Center Wednesday at 7 p.m.Â
"It's staying true to who we are," Lang-Montgomery said of preparing for the Panthers. "How can we be better rebounders, how can we get better offensively? We need to take better care of the basketball. That's been our Achilles heel throughout the year. I want us to be a high-possession team and so to do that, we've got to value the ball a little bit better."
