HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers owned the ball throughout the match and were relentless with their press and pressure from the opening kickoff.
Longwood dominated the possession in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Gardner-Webb 8-3 and forcing six saves.
However, the Runnin' Bulldogs scored against the run of play in the 33
rd minute when a corner kick was deflected home for an own goal.
The Lancers persevered though, but the equalizer just wasn't there before halftime.
After halftime, Longwood found a new level of energy. Again, the Lancers continued to press forward, firing off 11 shots in the final 45 minutes, with nine being on goal.
The pressure paid off as Longwood earned a free kick on the corner of the 18 in the 53
rd minute.
Alex Dinger squeezed a ball to the top of the six, where Robertson bodied it forward. As it crept to the goal line, Siner raced to the spot and tapped it home to tie the match at one.
It stayed all Longwood from there on out. In the 68
th minute, the Lancers played a ball into the box. A Gardner-Webb defender attempted to clear it but instead put it straight into the air six yards out from goal. Piazza flew in and powered it home with her head, hammering it through the hands of Stephanie Liu, for a 2-1 lead and her first collegiate goal.
Robertson capped the scoring with a wonder goal in the 86
th minute. She took a free kick from 35 yards out in front of the Lancer bench and bent it in to the near post. Liu couldn't keep the ball out as it carried her into the goal on the catch for a 3-1 lead.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"It's great to see our young ladies earn their first three points in conference play while protecting the home turf," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "It makes it even better knowing that they fought back from a 1-0 deficit to score three unanswered goals in the second half. Their energy and fight was there from beginning to end, so I thought the outcome was deserving. Also, a few of our players responded well to new positions and roles, and that was a huge part of our team performance today."
"As disappointed as we were to go down the way we did, I was really impressed with the way the team reacted and responded to that coming out for the second half," said Dyer. "We always have a team walk on game day, and I know they stuck around after and had a captain's meeting. I'm sure coming out strong, having that energy and that fight early was a part of that conversation. They get all the credit for that."
