HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Longwood dominated almost every statistical category in the match. The Lancers outshot Winthrop 19-6, had 11 corner kicks, and put 10 shots on target to Winthrop's four.
Â
A choppy first half saw both teams exit the field scoreless, although Longwood knocked on the door a few times. A corner kick was saved off the line early in the half.
Â
After halftime, the Lancers pressed hard and saw the payoff immediately. Thirty seconds into the half,
Coryn Silberstein sent a cross into the 18, and Piazza redirected it straight home for a 1-0 lead.
Â
But Winthrop created one chance on a slow counter, and Monssi Avila-Gutierrez found Balliet open about 12 yards out. Balliet didn't miss.
Â
From that point on, the Lancers continued to create chance after chance, but there was a lid in front of the goal. A variety of Lancers created chances, but Mia Vrataric made eight saves and four or five other opportunities were inches wide.
Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
Â
"Right now there's a collective feeling of disappointment because that's a game we should have won," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "We created more than enough quality goal-scoring opportunities but couldn't come up with the finishing touch. Combine that with a blatant defensive breakdown, and that's the recipe for a draw on our home field. That's soccer sometimes, so all we can do is own it and move forward. That's exactly what we will do heading into our next game."
Â
UP NEXT:
Â
Longwood heads to USC Upstate on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m., and the match will air on ESPN+.
