FARMVILLE, Va. - Luna Prieri scored early and often for Longwood Friday night to top Queens 3-1. The sophomore put the Lancers (2-1) on the board less than two minutes in, and she never stopped. She added two more to complete a hat trick against Queens (0-5).Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Longwood jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first period courtesy of Prieri, who charged in and scored in the second minute.
Longwood registered 13 shots, nine of which were on goal in route to their second win of the season as they controlled long sections of play.
After halftime, Queens rallied to tie the match at one apiece, but Prieri helped put the match out of reach. She gave Longwood the lead by redirecting a shot on a penalty corner in the third, and then she completed the hat trick in the fourth behind a solid defensive play.
Freshman Sophie Mooldijk earned her first start in the goal for Longwood, registering six saves while allowing one goal. She picked up her first win as a Lancer.Â
Ireland McDermott picked up her first assist on the season, when she aided Prieri on her second goal of the night.Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Queens is a team that puts high pressure and causes disruption, which they were able to do tonight at times," said Longwood head coach Miranda Rigg. "I thought we started off strong with early attacks to counter that. Overall, I am proud of our girls, as we continue to show the ability to fight and pull out wins."
UP NEXT:
Longwood now turns to a commonwealth match up with Richmond on Sunday at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
