HOW IT HAPPENED:
The two teams traded shots in the opening 15 minutes, but Liberty (6-0), the preseason favorite in the CUSA, struck first in the 16
th minute on Halle Engle's solo effort. It was her fourth goal of the season.
The Lancers (0-4-1) had a pair of shots on target in the first 25 minutes against the reigning CUSA champions, but Liberty struck again in the 31
st minute.
This time, Haley Noblit put the Flames up 2-0 off a feed from Gabby Miranda.
Longwood refused to quit, but Liberty managed the match well the rest of the night. Isabella Wedemeyer added one more after halftime to put the match out of reach for Liberty.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Liberty is one of the toughest teams we have on our schedule," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "In a game like this, it's critical that we don't beat ourselves first and then go find a way to capitalize on our opportunities. We made some mistakes defensively as a team, and they took full advantage of it. That's on me as a coach to better prepare our team so we force teams to break us down as opposed to breaking down ourselves. We battled the whole time, and we'll always be in teh game if we continue that and clean some things up with our decision making.
UP NEXT:
Longwood stays on the road for a fifth straight match with a trip to Davidson on Thursday, September 5. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the match will air on ESPN+.
