Lancers Even at Break with Wildcats, but Two Quick Strikes Change Match

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Longwood women's soccer was locked in an even contest with Davidson on Thursday night in the fifth straight road match for the Lancers (0-5-1).

However, a pair of quick strikes by Davidson (3-1-1) turned an even contest into a 2-0 win for the home side. The Wildcats scored back-to-back goals in a two-minute span.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first half featured plenty of midfield action as things seesawed back and forth between the 18.

Both back lines refused to bend much though, and that made things difficult for each team to create opportunities in the final 25 yards.

Davidson fired off five first half shots, with most coming in the final 10-15 minutes, and Longwood goalkeeper Sara Curtis nabbed the three that were on target. She finished with four saves.

After halftime, again, both teams were able to muddy the midfield and make it difficult to advance. The Lancers outpossessed and outcornered Davidson on the night, but two lightning strikes allowed Davidson to change the tenor of the match.

In the 61st minute, Davidson surpassed the midfield entirely, lofting a free kick over the top that Maddie Moody tracked down and finished for a 1-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Savannah Pruitt cranked home a golazo from 35 yards that just escaped the clutches of a diving Curtis.

While Longwood pressed forward, the Lancers could not find the equalizer.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"That's a frustrating result, more so than the others, because we did a lot of good things on both sides of the ball," said Longwood Head Coach Todd Dyer. "We can say we deserve better, but until we go out there and just take it from the opposition, it's just empty words. As bad as it feels at times like this, we are getting better and committed to achieving something great this year. It's all about overcoming adversity, and I know this group will respond."

UP NEXT:

The Lancers are back on the road for the sixth, and final, time of this current road swing with a trip to Old Dominion on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in Norfolk, and the match will air on ESPN+.
