HOW IT HAPPENED:

Less than five minutes into the match, Mother Nature intervened and sent the match into a delay for more than an hour.

Following the stoppage, both sides returned to the pitch, and the match was a back and forth tilt for the first 25 minutes.

However, it was the Mountaineers who struck first. Off a corner kick, Sara Curtis made a diving stop in goal for Longwood, but App State's Ellie Garrison banged home the rebound after it squirted through multiple players in the 30th minute.

The home side kept up the pressure over the next few minutes, and Garrison struck again. This time, she rifled the ball home from the edge of the 18 in the 42nd minute for a 2-0 lead.

The Lancers tried to climb back into the match after halftime in their third straight road match, but the damage was done as Appalachian State stayed unbeaten on the young season.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Simply stated, the first half was our demise," said Longwood Head Coach Todd Dyer. "We started well, and it was an even game until we allowed the corner and then conceded the goal on it. Goals change games, and we were fighting an uphill battle the rest of the way. We showed some character and fight in the second half but just couldn't find the goal we needed to get back in the game."

"We play these tough road games for a reason, and we just have to start playing with more composure and making better decisions consistently," Dyer added. "These next few games on the road will certainly provide that opportunity."

UP NEXT:

The Lancers stay on the road with a trip to Liberty on Sunday, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
