Lancers Nip Radford at Home, 4-3

Longwood wins four singles matches; Remains in hunt for Big South tournament

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood women's tennis team rallied for a 4-3 Big South Conference victory over Radford at the Lancer Courts on Tuesday.

The Lancers won four singles matches after dropping the doubles point on the way to beating the Highlanders for second consecutive match. Longwood improved to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in league play, remaining in the hunt for a spot in the conference tournament.

"Today's win against Radford for the women was a very gritty win from all of the girls," said Longwood head coach Carlos Lora. "From having lost the doubles point, all of the girls rallied to find four singles wins and take the other two matches into third sets. I am really proud of the fight and resilience that we showed as a team today."

Radford (3-16, 0-4) received doubles victories on courts three and one, respectively. Brooke Murphy and Michaela Stephens defeated Kashmira Manohar and Nina Hederich, 6-1, and Julia Abrams and Emily Brandow topped Karina Rizvanova and Phoebe Mitchell, 6-3 to wrap up the point. Feline van Eijkelenburg and Oriana Izarra won their No. 2 doubles contest over Ameek Batth and Lexi Smolder, 6-0.

Hederich got the Lancers on the board in singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Murphy at No. 6. Longwood took the lead as Mitchell defeated Brandow, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.

Sophia Marchetta then beat Rachel Ekanem on court five, 7-5, 6-1, to extend the lead in the dual to 3-1, prior to van Eijkelenburg earning the clinching point. She beat Abrams, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 1.

Radford won a pair of three-setters on courts two and four, respectively, for the final margin. Smolder defeated Rizvanova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, while Stephens outlasted Izarra, 0-6, 6-4, 10-3.

Longwood returns to action Thursday, traveling to Christopher Newport. First serve his set for 11 a.m.
