Lancers Take Down Nationally Ranked Christopher Newport, 6-1

Longwood tops Division-III power Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Longwood women's tennis team defeated Christopher Newport, 6-1, in non-conference action at James River Country Club on Thursday.

The Lancers improved to 7-9 overall with their third straight victory while Christopher Newport, which is currently No. 22 in NCAA Division III ITA rankings, played the match as exhibition.

"Today's win for the women was a very good win for them as a team," Longwood head coach Carlos Lora said. "Christopher Newport has a very tough squad that definitely pushed us to the limit in every court. Proud of the team win today and looking forward to the weekend."

Longwood won the doubles point by taking the matches on courts two and three. Nina Hederich and Kashmira Manohar defeated Megan Bauer and Kylie Schaefer, 6-1, at No. 3 before Phoebe Mitchell and Alexis Broderick topped Mia Linam and Samantha Robertson, 7-5, to clinch the point. The CNU tandem of Tessa Trate and Raine Weis beat Oriana Izarra and Feline van Eijkelenburg, 7-6 (4), on court one.

In singles, van Eijkelenburg earned a measure of revenge against Weis with a 6-4, 7-5 victory from the top spot. Mitchell defeated Linam, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2, on court three to give Longwood a 3-0 lead in the dual.

Manohar earned the clinching point at No. 4, outlasting Robertson, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3.

Trate put the Captains on the scoreboard at 4-1 with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win against Izarra from the No. 2 place in the lineup.

The Lancers closed the match with victories from Hederich against Kiersten Chang at No. 5, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8) and Broderick over Schaefer, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6.

Next, the Lancers travel to Charleston Southern Saturday at 10 a.m., for a crucial Big South Conference matchup with the Buccaneers.
