NORFOLK, Va. - Dallas Hairfield dominated on the mound, and Longwood's used a six run second inning to jump out early against Norfolk State Tuesday afternoon.
Hairfield threw a career high five innings while striking out a career best nine nine to help the Lancers (15-18) defeat the Spartans (9-23) 9-5. His offense backed him up with 11 hits on the day while
Noah Campanelli,
Hayden Harris,
Collin Hughes, and
Tanner Thomas all registered two apiece as the Lancers opened up a 10 game road trip with a win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Harris singled home Campanelli for a 1-0 lead in the first inning for Longwood.
After Justin Journette hit a solo shot for Norfolk State, the teams were knotted at one after one.
In the second inning, the Lancers exploded. The inning started with three straight singles from Hughes, Thomas, and Havens.
Casey Gibbs brought two runs around with a single, and Campanelli singled to add another a pitch later. Ultimately when the damage was tallied up, Longwood had plated six runs on six hits and led 7-1.
Hairfield handled it after that. The sophomore mowed down Norfolk State left and right, retiring 13 straight batters after giving up the solo home run and a single in his first collegiate start. He kept the Spartan attack off balance all night, only facing 17 batters.
Longwood tacked on a run in the fifth on a
Drew Camp single and added another insurance run in the ninth courtesy of a single from Thomas.
Ried Dittner came on in the ninth and shut the door on the Spartans to give Longwood a 9-5 win.
Hairfield (2-2) earned his second win on the season while Noah Wiggins (0-3) took the loss.
WHAT THEY SAID
"Dallas threw a great game today," said Longwood Head Coach
Chad Oxendine. "We needed that. That's a huge spark for us, and we hope that can get our pitching staff rolling in the right direction heading into this weekend. Our guys didn't try to do too much today at the plate. We didn't over swing, and took what they gave us which helped us have a big second inning today."
