CHARLESTON, S.C. — Freshman Maggie Hiatt, senior Korynna Anderson and sophomore Sophia Knock each hit home runs as the Longwood defeated Charleston Southern, 8-3, in the final game of the regular season on Sunday.
With the victory, Longwood (18-31, 11-7) sewed up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big South Conference tournament. The Lancers will meet the No. 3 seed-seeded team May 9 at 1 p.m., at Terry Field in Rock Hill, S.C.
"Tremendously proud of our team for their work," said Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown. "They have stayed steadily committed to a long road and many days of hard work. They are committed to pulling together when times are hard. Proud of them. Lots of hard work ahead."
Longwood outhit Charleston Southern, 11-6, on the day, with four going for extra bases, and received solid pitching from the tandem of freshman left-hander Cierra Gawryluk (3-6) and junior righty Er'ron Burton. Gawyrluk pitched four innings, scattering four hits and two earned runs, striking out one without walking a batter. Burton claimed her first save of the season, throwing the final three innings, which included extricating the Lancers from a bases-loaded situation in the seventh inning with minimal damage.Â
Longwood jumped on top with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning off of Annah Junge (7-10) Lauren Fox drew a leadoff walk and Lauren Taylor followed with a single to right field before Kayley DeVivi advanced the runners to second and third, respectively, with a ground ball.Â
Knock laid down a perfectly placed squeeze bunt for a hit as Fox slid in safely for a 1-0 lead. Pinch runner Mary Zepeda then stole second before Anderson lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Taylor.
Emily Vinson singled up the middle with two out in the third, doubling the lead, as Knock and DeVivi came home.
Hiatt led off the fourth with her fifth homer of the season to left field to make it 5-1. Anderson added her second home run in as many days, pushing the lead to 6-2 in the fifth. Knock then crushed her team-leading 10th homer of the season to straightaway center field for 8-2.
Burton worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, stranded two in the sixth and two more in the seventh, limiting Charleston Southern (23-24, 9-8) to a single run in the final frame to nail down the win.
The Nos. 2-4 hitters in the Lancers' batting order, Taylor, Knock and DeVivi each collected two hits apiece, finishing 6-for-10 with three RBIs and five runs scored.
Junge absorbed the loss in the circle for the Bucs, lasting just one inning before giving way to Riley Lauffler, who surrendered nine hits, six earned runs and two walks.
