Lancers Claim Radford Series with 8-2 Rubber-Game Victory

Anderson goes 4-for-4 with three RBIs as Longwood celebrates six seniors

FARMVILLE, Va. — Senior third baseman Korynna Anderson went 4-for-4 with a run scored and three driven in to help the Longwood softball team to an 8-2, series-clinching win over Radford at Lancer Field on Sunday.

Anderson had the big blow of the Lancers' five-run sixth inning when she lined a single down the left-field line, scoring classmates Kayley DeVivi and Lauren Taylor for the final margin. Entering that frame leading by just one at 3-2, Longwood (16-28, 9-6 Big South) loaded the bases with one out on singles from Avery Drake and Peyton Coleman followed by a walk to Emily Vinson.

Taylor then lofted a single off the outstretched glove of Radford second baseman Cassi Barbato, scoring Drake, which advanced Vinson to second and Coleman to third. DeVivi was then hit by an Abby Peace pitch, forcing in a run for 5-2. Peace issued a bases-loaded walk to Sophia Knock to make it 6-2 before Anderson's two-run single.

"So proud of our team and our seniors," said Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown. "They have shown such heart, fight, grit and grace in their time at Longwood. They embody the values of Longwood and Longwood softball. I feel so very blessed. As a coach, I cannot ask for better players or young women than our entire team."

The Lancers staked sophomore right-hander Maggie Chapin to a 3-0 lead through three innings with the help of a solo homer to center field by Knock — her team-leading ninth of the season — and RBI singles from Coleman and Anderson.

Chapin, who improved to 14-14 on the season, limited Radford (20-22, 5-10) to three hits, an earned run and a walk over four innings. She also struck out one before handing the ball to freshman lefty Cierra Gawryluk, who tossed a steady final three innings, fanning three, to earn her second save. Gawryluk scattered four hits, one earned run and did not walk a batter.

Radford found its way back into the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Abby Bossler hit a sacrifice fly to left in the fourth, scoring Kari Shedrick, and Shedrick singled to right in the fifth, scoring Emily Smith.

Morgan Cooper (5-10) earned the start in the circle for the Highlanders and lasted three innings. She gave up three runs (two earned) four hits and two walks, while fanning three.

The Lancers outhit Radford, 11-7, on the day. Drake and Coleman each also produced multiple-hit games, and Taylor, Anderson, Coleman and Drake stole bases.

Barbato finished 2-for-4 to lead the Radford offense.

Prior to the game, the Lancers honored their six graduating seniors — Rileigh De Weese, Lauren Fox, Anderson, Coleman, DeVivi and Taylor.

Longwood closes its home slate Tuesday at 6 p.m., against Liberty at Lancer Field before traveling to face No. 3 Duke Wednesday at 4 p.m.
