COLUMBIA, S.C. - Longwood battled and gave a good accounting of itself early, but No. 21 South Carolina pulled away late to win 10-2.
Ethan Walker tossed three strong innings for the Lancers (7-7), and
Corbin McCloud had his first multi-hit game of the season. However, South Carolina's Cole Messina countered with three RBI and three runs while hitting one home run for the Gamecocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
After South Carolina struck first in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a Cole Messina home run, Longwood responded in the top half of the fourth.
Logan Janney doubled down the line to score
Hayden Harris, and it evened the score at one.
In the bottom of the fifth South Carolina drove in a pair of runs to retake the lead, 3-1.
Longwood responded by loading the bases in the sixth, and
Matt Stevenson was hit by a pitch to trim the lead to 3-2. However, the Gamecocks wiggled out of the jam without suffering any more damage. Reliever Chris Veach would strikeout the next two Longwood batters to strand the bases loaded.
From there South Carolina would add five in the bottom half of the eighth inning to break the game open and take game two of the series.
Dallas Hairfield (0-2) took the loss for the Lancers as Dylan Eskew (2-1) earned the win for the Gamecocks.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Our guys fought hard tonight through the first five innings, unfortunately this game is nine," said Longwood Head Coach
Chad Oxendine. "We have to take clean up taking advantage of some opportunities when we get them. I am proud of the way we competed tonight and think we have a lot to take away from tonight's game."

Hayden Harris extended his hitting streak to 13 games after doubling in the fourth inning.
