FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood women's tennis took care of business and protected its home court on Monday afternoon against UNCG.
The Lancers (3-5) won the doubles point and never looked back to take down the Spartans (2-10) 5-2 at the New Lancer Courts.
All three doubles pairings cruised to wins, with the number one pairing of
Phoebe Mitchell and
Karina Rizvanova along with the number two pairing of
Oriana Izarra and
Feline van Eijkelenburg each rolling to 6-3 wins over Alexandra Dodashev/Raegan Mitchell and Lauren Thomson/Juliana Craft respectively. At number three doubles,
Sophia Marchetta and
Nina Hederich made quick work of Sydney Bly/Olivia Gallagher.
In singles, Longwood won three of their four singles matches in straight sets.
Rizvanova and Marchetta won in straight sets to get the team off to a quick start. Rizvanova claimed her straight set win over Thomson at number four singles 6-2, 6-3, and Marchetta won at number five singles 6-2, 6-4.
Mitchell then clinched the match for Longwood with a straight sets 6-4, 6-4 win over Gallagher.
Izarra provided the cherry on top with a three-set, come-from-behind win over Dodashev. After falling 7-5 in the first set, she won the second 6-4 and then won the tiebreaker 10-8.
Longwood returns to the court with a trip to Norfolk State on Sunday. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
