Longwood Lacrosse Rallies Past Presbyterian 16-13

Libby Keys Lancer Rally with Four Goals after Slow Start

CLINTON, S.C. – Longwood lacrosse got off to a slow start on Saturday afternoon against Presbyterian, but Claire Libby led the charge back.

The graduate student rifled home a season-high four goals, and Longwood (4-6, 2-0 Big South) won 16-13 by winning each of the final three quarters to stay unbeaten in Big South play.

Top LWU Performers:

Claire Libby: 4G, 1A, 1GB, 4DC
Ariana Tucci: 4G
Riley McDonald: 3G, 1A, 2GB, 1DC
Holly Hill: 3G, 2A

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Presbyterian (1-9, 0-2 Big South) rocketed out of the gates and jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead behind two goals form Abby Edmisten.

However, Libby's experience helped steady the Lancers. She scored the team's first two goals to keep Longwood hanging around, and the defense kicked into gear in the second quarter.

While the defense held Presbyterian scoreless for the first five minutes and change, Libby jumpstarted a 4-0 run on offense. Riley McDonald added a pair of goals, and Ariana Tucci capped it with a goal of her own for Longwood's first lead, 7-6.

The two sides entered the half tied at eight apiece, and then Longwood's defense clamped down on the Blue Hose after halftime.

Holly Hill, who had a hat trick of her own, broke the 8-8 tie less than two minutes into the third quarter, and Libby gave Longwood a 10-8 lead less than three minutes later.

Longwood led for the remainder of the contest, and the defense held Presbyterian to two goals in the fourth quarter to preserve the gritty road win.

Tucci had two of her four goals down the stretch to help close things out for Longwood.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"I'm very proud of how the team fought back today to come out on top," said Longwood Head Coach Kylar Ferguson. "A notable turnaround on draw controls for the second half allowed for two freshmen to lead in the points column again, making that two games in a row. We still have ots to work on and improve for Wednesdays game in Spartanburg. The team is ready to put in the work. Go Wood!"

NOTABLES:

Tucci has scored multiple goals in four straight games.

Hill has had a hat trick in back-to-back games to start Big South play.

UP NEXT:

Longwood stays on the road with a trip to Wofford on Wednesday, April 3. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
