Lancers Slip Past Davidson, 4-3

Longwood evens record to 6-6 with win over Atlantic 10 foe

FARMVILLE, Va. — Freshman Alejandro Hernandez lifted the Longwood men's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Davidson with a three-set win at No. 1 singles in non-conference action at the Lancer Courts Sunday.

With the dual match knotted at 3-3, Hernandez outlasted the Wildcats' Juan Perez, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the win for Lancers. The victory for Longwood (6-6) is the first against the Atlantic 10 Conference opponent in just its second all-time meeting.

"Today was a tough and gritty win for our guys," Longwood head coach Carlos Lora said. "We did not play our best all-around, but played well in the moments that we needed to as a team. Davidson is always a tough and competitive team so today's win against team is another testament of how far the guys have come and keep building on for this year."

Longwood began the day winning the doubles point by taking matches on courts one and two. Hernandez and Timéo Puech clinched there with a 7-5 win against Udday Singh and Alejandro Solares at No. 1. 

Seva Rusin and Luis Reis gave the Lancers the lead in doubles with another 7-5 decision versus Nikhil Mukherjee and Luca Lovrich. Davidson's Juan Perez and Nico Pinzon gave the their team an early edge in doubles, topping the No. 2 pair of Petar Belosevic and Alejandro Uribe, 6-4.

Puech retired following the first set of his No. 2 singles match with Singh, allowing Davidson to tie the dual, 1-1. Sebastian Moran Carpio then put the Wildcats ahead with a win over Lorenzo Meschini, 7-6 (6), 6-2, at No. 4.

Belosevic beat Solares on court three, 6-4, 6-4, prior to a 6-4, 6-3 Alejandro Uribe win at No. 5 over Nico Pinzon.

Jerry Wang defeated Reis, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6, setting the stage for the deciding match.

The Lancers return to the court Thursday at 2 p.m., hosting North Carolina Central.
