Lancers Fall to Gardner-Webb in Men’s Tennis, 6-1

Hernandez wins No. 2 singles battle in three sets

FARMVILLE, Va. — Freshman Alejandro Hernandez won his No. 2 singles match in three sets, but Gardner-Webb defeated the Longwood men's tennis team, 6-1, on the Lancer Courts Thursday in Big South Conference action.

Hernandez topped Gardner-Webb's Alex Lepine, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (4) to get Longwood on the scoreboard at 5-1. 

Gardner-Webb won on courts one and two in doubles and five, three, four, one and six, respectively, in singles to improve to 14-3 overall and 2-0 in the league. 

"Today was a tough battle for the men against a tough Gardner Webb team," said Longwood head coach Carlos Lora. "We competed from start to finish in the match on all courts. Now we wait to see where we stand in conference as we continue to build forward." 

Eduardo Dias and Christian Van Wyk opened the day with a 6-1 win over Timéo Puech and Hernandez while Numa Lemieux-Monette and Jurie Terblanche beat Alexandro Uribe and Petar Belosevic, 6-2.

Van Wyk defeated Lorenzo Meschini, 6-3, 6-1, to begin singles play. Lemieux-Monette dispatched Belosevic, 6-1, 6-4. Kim Niethammer topped Uribe, 6-3, 6-4.

Dias defeated Puech, 6-4, 7-5, and Terblanche closed the match with a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (5) victory over Luis Reis.

The Lancers fell to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference with the loss.

Longwood returns to the court Sunday at 1 p.m., against Davidson at home.
