Lancers Hang with No. 12/16 Virginia Tech in Doubleheader

Longwood enjoys leads in both games against the ACC power

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood softball team held leads in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with No. 12/16 Virginia Tech Tuesday but the Hokies came storming back for a 8-4, 8-5 sweep at Lancer Field.

Longwood (9-19) led 3-0 after two innings in the opener and received a three-run home run to left field from freshman Avery Miller in the nightcap to earn a 5-3 lead in the third inning of that one. Virginia Tech, though, banged out a combined 23 hits on the day, flexing its offensive muscle in extending its winning streak to five games.

"Two hard-fought games." Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "Starting to put the pieces together we have been working on for a while. Not where we want to be, but very pleased with the growth. Lots of hard work ahead. Proud of our young ladies."

The Lancers got to Hokies' starter Cassie Grizzard for four runs in the first four innings, before Erin Lemley took control in the circle, fanning 10 batters over the final four innings, allowing just one walk and hitting a batter for her second save.

Lauren Taylor's two-run single up the middle capped the three-run first inning in the first game.

Virginia Tech's Bre Peck hit a third-inning, three-run home run to left-center field, giving the Hokies the lead for good at 5-3.

Longwood added a run in the bottom of the frame on an Avery Drake single. Tech tallied one more in the fourth and two runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Lauren Fox was 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot in the lineup and Korynna Anderson scored a pair of runs for the Lancers. Six different platers chipped in hits as Longgwood had seven as a team.

Maggie Chapin threw six innings, scattering 11 hits and eight runs with three walks and four strikeouts, falling to 9-9 on the year. Er'ron Burton threw a clean seventh with a strikeout.

Cameron Fagan went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBIs, pacing the Hokies' offense in the second game, helping Tech rebound after falling behind on the Miller blast — her second of the year — that also plated Taylor and Anderson. Tech answered Longwood's three-run frame with four in the top of there forth and tacked on one more inn the fifth.

Virginia Tech pitchers Emma Mazzarone and Lyndsey Grein combined to allow just five hits and strike out 11 batters to complete the sweep. Grein improved to 7-2 on the year with four innings of one-hit ball.

Burton (0-7) absorbed the loss in the circle for the Lancers. She surrendered eight hits and five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Cierra Gawryluk went the rest of the way, allowing for hits and two earned.

Longwood is back in action March 29 when it starts a three-game set at home against Presbyterian. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
