Men’s Tennis Opens Big South Slate with 6-1 Win over Radford

Lancers beat Radford for first time since 2018

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood men's tennis team won for the fifth time in six matches, defeating Radford, 6-1, in the Big South Conference opener for both at the Lancer Courts Wednesday.

The win marked Longwood's first over the in-state rival Highlanders since March 25, 2018, a 4-3 home victory.

"I am really proud to see the effort and the fight that the guys gave against Radford today," Longwood head coach Carlos Lora said. "Today's results shows how far we have already come this year in building the team that we want to be. Looking forward to continuing to build this program together with them."

The Lancers (5-3, 1-0 Big South) won the doubles point with match victories on courts one and three. Timéo Puech and Alejandro Hernandez defeated Guilherme Severin and Tom Saporta, 6-3, while Luis Reis and Seva Rusin clinched the point with a 7-5 decision against Filippo Marangoni and Manfredi Vergine.

Petar Belosevic begin singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Robert Hagen at No. 3 and Lorenzo Meschini followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win versus Evan Edwards for a 3-0 lead.

Severin topped Hernandez, 6-1, 7-5, to get Radford (0-9, 0-1) on the board at 3-1, but Longwood cliched the match when Reis dispatched Vergine, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6.

The Lancers also received victories from Puech against Saporta on court two, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9), and Alejandro Uribe against Charles Courteau on court four, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Longwood returns to action Saturday at UNC Asheville at 2 p.m.
